Bright and always rising, the balloon is confronting, at the same time balancing the darkness and depression of the surroundings. Although Kuang Chu doesn't like a single and concrete interpretation of an artwork, one would not be wrong in saying that the red balloon is a symbol of hope, or a materialization of high spirit.
The "Red Balloon" series has been a long journey for Kuang Chu. The series can be divided into three periods. The first period is from 2012 to 2013. In this period, Kuang Chu drew the first batch of the "Red Balloon" series with fine liners on 40cm x 30cm paper, which is represented by "The Well" and "I Love Kafka". The works created in this period are primitive in techniques but celebrated by their tangible force of emotion.
The second period is from 2015 to 2016. In this period, Kuang Chu tried engraving-like techniques on paper. To take in more detail, Kuang Chu began to use larger 80cm x 60cm paper. These are represented by "Face Fruits" and "Peacock Octopus". The works created in this period are very fine drawings, but still didn't fulfill Kuang Chu's expectation.
The third period began in 2019 when Kuang Chu started to use an iPad Pro. Represented by "Dragon Slaying" and "Withering Flowers", Kuang Chu believes they are just the right artworks created by utilizing the right approach.
